Prism Photo Workshop co-founder and co-director Alyssa Schukar has a decade of experience navigating the freelance industry. As a consistent freelance contributor to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, she understands the needs of freelance visual storytellers. Aware of the financial and personal difficulties that drive people out of photojournalism, she is committed to making the industry more inclusive and equitable, particularly by helping others establish successful freelance careers. Throughout her career, she has mentored fellow independent visual storytellers through organizations like the International Women’s Media Foundation and the National Press Photographers Association. She also started Chicago Women in Media, an informal group for female-identifying and nonbinary photographers to meet and support each other. As the first woman co-director of the 75-year-old Missouri Photo Workshop, she led the effort to offer guidance and support specifically geared toward freelance photographers.
